Learning Mentor

 

Job Summary:

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and creative Learning Mentor. Learning Mentors provide an invaluable service, supporting teaching, learning and pastoral care, addressing the needs of students who need help to overcome barriers to learning. The successful candidate will have experience of working with children with behavioural difficulties, preferably in a school environment and implementing behaviour management strategies to promote positive behaviour in order to maximise the achievements and wellbeing of students.

Learning mentors help students develop coping strategies, enhance their motivation, raise their aspirations and encourage them to re-engage in learning. To work effectively, learning mentors have to take into account the range of complex issues that usually lay behind problems with learning and achievement (eg bereavement, lack of confidence/low self-esteem, low aspirations, mental health issues, relationship difficulties, bullying, peer pressure, family issues/concerns).

The Centre is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This position is subject to an Enhanced DBS Disclosure, Overseas Police Clearances (if applicable) and professional references checks.

 

Responsibilities

  • Follow individualised support plans based on the needs and goals of each young person.
  • Provide guidance, counselling, and emotional support to help young people overcome personal challenges and build resilience.
  • Assist young people in accessing educational, vocational, and employment opportunities, as well as community resources.
  • Facilitate group activities and workshops on topics such as life skills, conflict resolution, and personal development.

 

Qualifications:

  • Enhanced Child DBS ideally on Update Service - or willing to apply.
  • Experience working with young people facing diverse challenges, such as mental health issues, substance abuse, homelessness, or involvement in the justice system would be an advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with young people from different backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills, with the ability to provide empathetic support and guidance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
